No title appears on this map; the title applied here is based on content. Scale and legend are not given; orientation is marked along the borders on all four sides with north at the top. Having no town wall but four direction gates, Songyang County is depicted with simple lines on the map. Military units and posts are depicted pictorially, accompanied with annotations to record boundaries of each military unit, number of soldiers, and neighboring counties. Red labels are affixed to the map to indicate neighboring counties such as Xuanping, Longquan, and Suichang.

Songyang Battalion was under the jurisdiction of the Right Battalion of Chuzhou Division and stationed soldiers had been reduced to less than 30 in 1877. Comparing this map with “Military Map of Chuzhou Prefecture” (Add. MS. 16361 (B)) of Jiaqing period in the British Library’s collection, the numbers of soldiers in Songyang Battalion are about the same. These two maps may have been drawn around the same time during Qing Jiaqing period, 1796-1820.
