No title appears on this map; the title applied here is based on content. Scale and legend are not given; orientation is marked along the borders on all four sides with north at the top. The map covers the Hangzhou Bay area, from the mouth of the Qiantang River in the west to the sea in the east; from Zhapu town of Jiaxing Prefecture in Hangzhou Bay in the north to Zhaobao Mountain area in Zhenhai County, Hushan Suo, and Shangyu County in Shaoxing Prefecture in the east. The military deployment on the south bank of Hangzhou Bay is depicted in detail. It is an official coastal defense map for the south bank that is under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Corps Admiral.
Based on the information given, the map may have been drawn before the first Opium War (1840-1842). The cartographic depiction of the ocean is slightly different from a similar map titled “Military Map of Hangzhou Bay” (Maps 188.kk.1 (3)) in the British Library’s collection, although the rest of the information is about the same. Both maps may have been drawn around the same time, before the 20th year of Qing Daoguang’s reign, 1840.
