On the bottom of the scroll, the name Wang Hui (1632-1717) appears, the originator of the Yushan artistic school that was popular in the late Qing dynasty. (Wang was also known as Wang Shigu, Gengyansanren, Qinghuilaoren). The inscription is dated the 43th year of Kangxi’s reign, 1704. The map uses a traditional Chinese pictorial style to depict the geographic features of the Yellow River: from left at Puchanghai, the source of the Yellow River in Shanshan County, Xinjiang Province to the right along the northern part of Jiangsu, including the coastline, rivers and the Grand Canal. The coverage is very broad but in great detail. The map shows the area from the Grand Canal to the end of Beijing, and includes shuttle boats and merchant fleets. The Yellow River is depicted in waves and drawn in yellow; other rivers use light blue.
The map depicts fortifications constructed on Hongze Lake and the Yellow River by Jin Fu (1633-1692). There is also a depiction of the Great Temple and Jiuligang fortification built by River Governor Zhang Penghe (1649-1725) in 42th year of Kangxi’s reign, 1703. Therefore, the map may have been drawn after 1703. Although there is an inscription of Wang Hui at the end of the map, the style is not consistent with his usual plump and smooth strokes. This is a copy by an unknown artist.
