No title appears on this map; the title applied here is based on content. The folded atlas consists of five maps of different sizes with a hard cover wrapped in yellow satin. The atlas depicts the southern palaces and stops of the Qianlong emperor’s inspection tour. All the travelling routes marked with yellow dotted lines started from Hangzhou Palace and Shengyin Temple with distances given on affixed labels. The atlas is believed to have been the travel-planning document presented to the emperor.

Qing emperors had two palaces in Hangzhou. They were “Taipingfang Palace” and “Shengyin Palace.” Taipingfang Palace was located inside the Yongjin Gate, formerly the Textile Department. The Kangxi emperor first visited Hangzhou since his second southern inspection tours in 1689; he also stayed in Hangzhou during his third and fourth tours in 1699 and 1703. On his fifth tour to the south in 1705, Kangxi granted a petition to build another palace south of Gushan Mountain, according to Guangxu Hangzhou Gazetteers. The Gushan Palace was renamed Shengyin Temple in 1728 by the Yongzheng emperor. In 1751, the Qianlong emperor made his first trip south; he had the palace rebuilt and renamed “Shengyin Palace”. The Qianlong emperor used the palace as his main residence during his six southern trips. Based on map content, the atlas was drawn for the Qianlong emperor’s first trip to Hangzhou.
