No title appears on this map; the title applied here is based on content. Scale is not given; legend is added on by later users to indicate beacons, bridges, roads, and canals; orientation is marked along the borders on all four sides with north at the top. The map was heavily annotated in English with distances and descriptions, indicating the map was used by Westerners. In addition to depicting the island’s topography, the map offers pictorial depictions of Dinghai town, military training camps, piers, harbors, hills, and roads. Dinghai, formerly named Zhoushan, was changed to Dinghai Mountain in the 25th year of Kangxi’s reign, 1686, when the emperor bestowed the new name. In 1688, Dinghai County was established in the island under the jurisdiction of Ningbo Prefecture, whereas another area once known as Dinghai became known as Zhenhai County.

The content is almost the same as another map titled “Complete Map of Zhoushan Island” (Add. MS. 17327) in the British Library’s collection, but the defensed walls on this map was not as complete. The map may have been drawn after the 21st year of Qing Daoguang’s reign, 1841.
