The title is written on top of the map. No scale, legend, or orientation is indicated, but one can conclude that north is at the top of the map by looking at the distribution of administrative areas and geographical features. The map covers territory bordered by Changshu County to the east, Wujin, Yanghu, Wuxi Counties to the west, Yangtze River to the north, and Wuxi and Jingui Counties to the south. Jiangying County is under the jurisdiction of Changzhou Prefecture. The county’s capital town and mountains are depicted pictorially, villages are illustrated in the image of houses; towns are marked in rectangular boxes; rivers and mountain are identified by names; roads in red and black dots. The map is an administrative map of Jiangyin County.
Jiangyin brigade of Yangtze Navy was established in the seventh year of Tongzhi’s reign, 1868. The map has no mention of it; only one military unit Yangser brigade was recorded and it was built in Ming Jiajing period, 1558. The Yangser brigade was later merged into Fuyou brigade under the jurisdiction of Fushan Division in the eighth year of Tongzhi’s reign, 1869. The map was most likely made before the merger. This is one of Charles George Gordon’s No. 32 collection. The verso of map is stamped with the seal of “Ever Victorious Army.” This is just another clue to the time period of the map being made. In 1863, Charles George Gordon (1833-1885), known as Chinese Gordon, was a British army officer who was placed in command of the “Ever Victorious Army,” a force of Chinese soldiers led by European officers. In the early 1860s, Gordon and his men were instrumental in putting down the Taiping Rebellion. Gordon was promoted by the Emperor to the honor rank of Tidu that is the chief commander of Jiangsu province. The map may have been drawn before the fifth year of Tongzhi’s reign, 1866.
