The map depicts the layout of Taiyan, the capital of Shanxi Province, including the city wall, streets, government offices, reservoirs, colleges, temples, and other buildings. Each is represented with a different symbol. The city is depicted in detail while the surrounding areas, such as Manchuria and Fenshui, are drawn with little detail. The map is not drawn to scale; it shows the outline of the city and relative location of buildings.
The inscription on the bottom left reads “drawn by Zhang Derun, member of the Jun Wen Publishing House.” The Jun Wen Publishing House was established by Shanxi governor Zen Guoquan in Taiyuan in 1879.
The map can be studied with the following map in the National Palace Museum's collection: title: Shanxi Taiyuan Fu yu tu (map no. 021562).
