Tile is written on the wooden box. The map depicts repairs to the 18-segment embankments along the Xiang He River in Zhongxiang County, Anlu Prefecture, Hubei Province. Zhongxiang County is attached to Anlu Prefecture; in fact both shared the same location for administrative offices. The Xiang River is also known as Hanshui. Orientation is marked along the borders on all four sides with north to the right; it starts from Beixinji on the right and ends at Malinkou and Zhangbikou on the left. 23. The map uses the Chinese cartographic grid; a side of each grid represents 1li (approximately 0.33 miles). The total length of the embankment is 33,515 gong which is about 93 miles.
The map was drawn in Chinese Cunfa landscape style with some features shown pictorially, such as mountains and villages. Notes explain that yellow, red, and green are used for different types of embankments. Six red labels note the status of embankment repairs. All embankments were built on the east bank of the river. The map was drawn from the 9th year of Xianfeng (1859) to the 1st year of Guangxu (1875).
The map can be studied with the following documents written in Daoguang 13-14 nian (1833-1834) in the National Palace Museum’s collection: title: Shi Hubei Sheng Zhongxiang Xian gan xiu di gong (Grand Council file no. 063474); title: Yanshou Xiangyang Fu Laolong shi di bing Zhongxiang Xian man kui di gong qing xing (Grand Council file no. 064846); title: Yu shi Liu Yi tiao chen shui li shi bing Zhongxiang Xian xiu zhu yue di (Grand Council file no. 067374); title: Hubei Anlu Fu fu min xiang tu (Grand Council file no. 021952).
