The map is oriented with north on the bottom. The Yellow River flows from upstream to downstream with its right bank on top.The map covers the area from Tongguan at the junction of Henan and Shaanxi Province on the right to the junction of Jiangnan,Shandong, and Henan Province on the left.
The map depicts fascine construction and fortification along the Yellow River in Henan Province. The Yellow River is drawn in double yellow lines; other rivers use light blue and brown lines; embankments and fascine dams use thin brown lines; new construction uses thin red lines; notes contain detailed explanations of the forts. The map uses symbols to describe landforms, mountains, fortresses, and their relative locations; however, the locations are not consistent with actual orientation.
Historically speaking, the Yellow River in Henan Province experienced a great deal of change in direction, flooding and so on. Henan has always been an important theme for maps associated with the Yellow River, especially topics connected to commerce and safety. Many thematic maps of this nature have survived and appear in map libraries, including the National Palace Museum.
