The map expands from right to left with varied orientation; the right bank is on top. The map starts from right at Shouzhang and Yanggujie and ends left at Lijin County in Shandong where the mouth of the Yellow River located. Drawn in traditional Chinese landscape style, the map describes in more detail the flood-prevention and control projects, inner and outer embankments, fascine dams, forts, villages, and dangerous and hazardous construction sites on the Yellow River. Some place names along the Yellow River are given on the map. The Yellow River and other rivers are colored in blue, unlike other traditional maps that depicted the Yellow River in yellow. The embankment dams use brown lines. Different symbols are used to distinguish cities, villages, and forts. The mountain symbols are roughly applied on the map and they are not consistent with the actual mountains.
Upon closer examination of the map, the “old mouth of the Grand Canal” in Zhangqiuzhen, Yanggu County was blocked due to silt; the “new mouth of the Grand Canal” Taochengfu was open and is indicated on the map; the river mouth project was completed in the 7th Year of Qing Guangxu Reign (1881); it is believed that the map was drawn after 1881.
The map can be studied with the following maps in the National Palace Museum's collection: title: Shandong Yun He tu (map no. 021588); title: Shandong Buhetingshu Shoudongxun Balimiao gun shui shi ba bing jia zhu tu yan tu (Grand Council file no. 067800-a); title: Zhili Shandong Henan san sheng Huang He quan tu (purchase no. 002579-002583); title: Shandong xin zhu Huang He liang an chang di quan tu (Grand Council file no. 127456).
