The map is viewed from right to left, from the source of the river upstream to the Lanzhou area. The map was decorated with blue brocade trim and was an official document prepared for Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. On the top of the map, there are two illustrated discussions written in both Chinese and Manchu: “The Royal poem of the Yellow River source,” and “The Imperial account of the rivers in Song Dynasty.” The map depicts the area from the source of the Yellow River upstream near Lanzhou in Gansu province. Drawn in traditional Chinese landscape style, the map depicts mountains, forests, lakes, and other geographic features. Roads are represented by dotted lines; cities by pictorial walls, including Xining, Nianbo, Pingfan, Zhuanglang, Hezhou, Taozhou, and Lanzhou. There is some incorrect information on the map: (1) the location of Gyaring Lake is indentified as Arak Lake; (2) Eling Lake (Ngoring Lake) as Ceke Lake; and (3) the Yellow River is erroneously depicted as originating from a variety of sources.
The map can be studied with the following maps in the National Palace Museum's collection: title: Huanghe fa yuan zhi Henan Sheng ge ting gong cheng qing xing tu (map no. 020882); title: Jiangnan Sheng Huanghe ge ting shu he dao gong cheng qing xing tu (map no. 020883).
