The map depicts mountains and lakes in Shandong Province and uses the Chinese cartographic grid; a side of each grid represents 100 li (approximately 33 miles). Orientation is marked along the borders on all four sides. Text on the bottom right describes prefectures and counties in the province; it also records number of prefectures, municipalities, subprefecture, and counties. The note gives distances from cities and towns to the provincial capital, Jinan, and its location in relation to Shuntian Fu (Beijing). Different symbols are used to indicate the location of prefectures, departments, subprefectures, and counties. Major cities, towns, checkpoints along the Great Wall, and waterway traffic points are prominently marked. The note also records adjoining states and counties along the border. The Yellow River in the north stream joins Daqing River into the sea, and it is marked as the new Yellow River.
The map is one of 26 maps in “Huang chao zhi sheng di yu quan tu” compiled by Hubei Guan Shu Ju in the 3rd Year of Qing Tongzhi Reign (1864).
This map can be studied with the following maps in the National Palace Museum's collection: title: Shandong tong sheng yu tu (map no. 021517-021519); title: Shandong Sheng di tu (map no. 021482).
