The map depicts Zhili Province, including mountains, rivers, and lakes. It utilizes the Chinese cartographic grid; a side of each grid represents 100 li (approximately 33 miles). Orientation is marked on the four sides of the map. The note along the bottom right records the provincial capital, Baoding, Zhili Prefecture, and the number of departments, sub-prefectures, and counties. It explains the orientation and location of Baoding in relation to the capital, Shuntian Fu (Beijing). Also, it gives distances from different towns to Baoding. Different symbols are used to indicate the location of prefectures, departments, sub-prefectures, and counties. Major cities, towns, Great Wall checkpoints, and the waterway traffic points are prominently marked. The note also records the adjoining states and counties along the border. The map doesn't show roads, but place names, administrative planning, and population density are clearly marked.
The map was made by Hubei Guan Shu Ju, and it is a part of “Huang chao zhi sheng di yu quan tu,” printed in the 3rd Year of Qing Tongzhi Reign (1864). The whole set consists of 26 map sheets; it is a fairly accurate map made in the late nineteenth century, and uses the traditional Chinese cartographic grid. A colored manuscript map of Xinjiang published by Hubei Chong Wen Publisher was added later, so there are 27 map sheets for this set. There are many maps of Zhili in the National Palace Museum. This map can be studied with the following maps: title: Zhili tong sheng yu tu (map no. 021434); title: Zhili tu (map no. 021481); title: Zhili quan sheng dao li zong tu (map no. 021569-021571); title: Zhili Hejian Fu yu tu (map no. 021552); title: Zhili Shuntian Fu yu tu (map no. 021573); title: Zhili Baoding Fu yu tu (map no. 021574); title: Zhili Shunde Fu yu tu (map no.
