The maps are oriented with north at the bottom and use the socalled Chinese “latticework” cartographic grid. A side of each grid represents 100 li (approximately 33 miles) written on the first general map. There is also a text legend for the symbols used in the atlas. Squares indicate Fu (Prefecture); diamonds for Ting (Subprefecture); rectangles for Zhou (Department); double squares for Zhilizhou (Municipality); circles for Xian (County). The other maps are “Xi Lu Ting Tu”, “Bei Lu Ting Tu”, “Dong Lu Ting Tu”, “Nan Lu Ting Tu”, and nine prefectures. Prefectures include Baoding Fu, Yongping Fu, Hejian Fu, Tianjin Fu, Zhengding Fu, Shunde Fu, Guangping Fu, Daming Fu, and Xuanhua Fu. There are six municipalities: Zunhua Zhou, Yi Zhou, Ji Zhou, Zhao Zhou, Shen Zhou, and Ding Zhou. There are 24 maps in total including a map of “Chengde Fu” and “Kou Bei San Ting Tu”. The administrative divisions, mountains, rivers, major roads, and the Great Wall are simply sketched with an explanation for the symbols to indicate counties. There is a postscript at the end of the atlas to explain procedures used for compilation.
There are many maps in the National Palace Museum's collection that can be studied and compared with this map; for example, title: Zhili tong sheng yu tu (map no. 021434); title: Zhili tu (map no. 021481); title: Zhili quan sheng dao li zong tu (map no. 021569- 021571); title: Zhili Hejian fu yu tu (map no. 021552); title: Zhili Shuntian fu yu tu (map no. 021573); title: Zhili Baoding fu yu tu (map no. 0215574); title: Zhili Shunde fu yu tu (map no. 021575); title: Zhili Yongping fu dao li zong tu (map no. 021580); title: Zhili Zhending fu dao li zong tu (map no. 021581).
